Q&A: Calculate the rate of heat flow by conduction through a glass window?
Question by enforcer: Calculate the rate of heat flow by conduction through a glass window?
Calculate the rate of heat flow by conduction through a glass window 2.0 m multiplied by 1.5 m in area and 3.2 mm thick, if the inner temperature is 15°C, assuming there are strong gusty winds and that the external temperature is -5°C.
____W
Best answer:
Answer by Debbie
Use H = kA*(TH-TC)/L k for glass = 0.80 W/m*K So H = 0.8*(2.0*1.5)*(15–5)/.0032 = 1500W

Q&A: How can I tell if a window glass is a triplex or regular?
Question by eyal b: How can I tell if a window glass is a triplex or regular?
There is nothing written on it and I don’t want to break it or dismantle the frame.
Is there a Polaroid filter or something in this direction?

Unless the thing is ancient, if it’s laminated glass, there will be a stamp indicating it is laminated. Also bear in mind what the glass is being used for. Anything made to provide protection from impact (cars, planes, etc.) will be laminated.

Does anyone know how to put in a glass block window?
Question by turkey: Does anyone know how to put in a glass block window?
I am wanting to take a window out and replace it with glass or acrylic blocks.
Best answer:
Answer by amy az
they sell glass block spacers purchase them and how many glass blocks you figure you need figuring by the size glass block you want if I remember right most are 8×8 then remove the old window and frame using the spacers and block as a guide figure out the opening size u need remember a little loose is better then tight.starting at the bottom using glass block mortar apply enough to start installing block work your way up from there.once you have all the block in twist the spacers to remove the ends then use mortar to grout. For in interesting effect spray sides of the blocks white before installing.good luck it’s not that difficult. If you need more info feel free to contact me.

I need to trim my glass block window after installing a vinyl tub surround, looking for supplier of plastic tr?
Question by Darrell: I need to trim my glass block window after installing a vinyl tub surround, looking for supplier of plastic tr?
I need to trim my window with plastic 2″x2″ angled tile and cant find anything at my local stores .
I am going to install a tub surround but the glass block window is recessed approx. 2″ so I need to find a product other than ceramic tile to terminate where I cut out the surround at the window. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer by glen t
I found 90degree angle at home depot for a 2 inch gap from glass block to surround you could put a strip of the surround that you cut out down then put that 90 over the top keeping the seal flat so as not to get a water leak

How much would be the amplitude of vibration in the window glass when a nearby speaker speaks.?
Question by Dr. Ghazanfar: How much would be the amplitude of vibration in the window glass when a nearby speaker speaks.?
what is the peak to peak amplitude in the glass when a nearby speaker speaks. Because an interferometer give this signal which may be difficult to detect using normal fringe detection system.
Best answer:
Answer by billrussell42
Very small. It depends on the thickness and the stiffness of the glass. A thermopane glass, which has a very thin sheet of glass, will vibrate a lot more than a 1/2 inch think solid piece.
It also depends on the size of the sheet of glass and how it is mounted. The larger the sheet, the easier it is to vibrate.
Finally, the resonant frequency of the glass is important, and how close to that frequency the speaker output is.

I have a stain glass window that I want installed correctly as a basement faux window with a light behind it.?
Question by ulcgblt: I have a stain glass window that I want installed correctly as a basement faux window with a light behind it.?
I want suggestions on light kits or back lighting that is safe to put in a wall? As it is right now the contractor wants to put tin foil in the wall to act as a reflector and I would prefer he not do this due to safety concerns. Please suggest safe ways to back light a stain glass window installed in a sheet rock and timber wall structure.

I am a professional stained glass artist and have suggested a few different ways for my clients to do the same thing in their own homes.
The best place to install a stained glass window is in a window itself where it is subject to a wide range of changing light. This changing light results in a constantly changing piece of artwork that is never the same from week to week, day to day, hour to hour…
If this is not feasible, artificial lighting is the alternative as stained glass is reliant upon light to make it look its best! IKEA has recently introduced some art glass lighting fixtures that provide back-lighting to mass-produced (yuck!) kiln-formed art glass panels. If you get rid of the mass-produced, pedestrian panel that goes with the light fixture itself, you have an easy solution to your lighting problem. (I know I am condescending about IKEA’s product, but I AM a professional glass artist, after all!)
Another alternative is to build a light box – either built into the wall or built against the wall. This is built to the size of your stained glass window panel and both provides a mounting structure away from the wall, as well as a consistent and even light source. Flourescent light bulbs would be better as they offer a more even and consistent light, rather than the ‘hot’ spots that are typical of light bulbs. I do not support the use of tinfoil as this could cause an increase in the heat that your stained glass panel is exposed to. Without proper ventilation, this increased heat could cause heat stresses to develop in your stained glass panel.
If built out of the wall, the light box can be surrounded by a white acyric perspex frame to provide an interesting light effect around the stained glass window as well as behind it, or it can by surrounded by a wooden frame which will limit the light to JUST behind the stained glass panel itself. This is the best approach if the lighting is to be housed in a recess within the wall….
There are other ways of installing a stained glass window panel, but these are my top three suggestions for the situation(s) that you suggested in your query….
I hope that this is of use to you. If anyone is interested in further information or in obtaining a uniquely designed stained glass panel for their home, my website is located at www.jaraglassworks.ca

Can I use a satellite dish behind a glass window?
Question by pbeckizzle: Can I use a satellite dish behind a glass window?
I live in a dorm with large glass windows which cant open. They do face the south (which ive heard is necessary). I want to hook up satellite in my room but theres no way for me to put it on the external of the building… any hope for me?

Answer by Fisherman
Absolutely. You can mount a satellite dish behind a glass window. No problem. The only restrictions are that the glass cannot be leaded glass or tinted. These cause what we call “attenuation” to the signal because of the metallic content. The attenuation can be catastrophic. Remember that the position of the antenna needs to accommodate the elevation angle needed to “see” the satellite over the equator. This means that if you are in Miami the antenna needs to look “upward” at a steeper angle than in Ottawa, Canada which “sees” the satellite at a much lower angle. You can learn the azimuth and elevation pointing angles needed for your location from the web site of satellite TV supplier. There will be a kind of “protractor” on the elevation adjustment control of the antenna. With the antenna mounted horizontally on whatever you intend to mount it, set the elevation angle to the proper value. Use a compass to identify a landmark out the window on the proper azimuth. (You may have to make an allowance for the magnetic declination in your area if it is more than a few degrees.) Boresight (aim like a rifle) the antenna at the landmark. Some dish antennas have a hole or some way to boresight the dish. If not, draw a line at the top center edge of the dish and use it to line it up with your landmark. Make the final adjustments for best on-screen picture per the web site instructions.
Good luck and enjoy your TV, but study, study, study. That’s what you are there for.

Question by anonomama: I want to install a glass block window in a brick wall where there is no window or opening. How do i do it?
Friends at work (with no building exp) say i may risk damaging the integrity of the brick wall if i start removing bricks for the window. I was wondering if anyone had ever installed a glass block window where there wasnt a window opening on a brick wall, and if so could you give me some tips or point me in the direction of a website that has a DIY about it.

Without seeing the wall and/or what it may or may not be supporting myself, I would recommend you ask a professional to do the work for you. That way, if they screw it up, they have to fix it.

What is the max % of tinted glass window allow & still legal?
Question by whyme: What is the max % of tinted glass window allow & still legal?
I want to buy a new minivan & have the car windows tinted as dark as i can & still within the legal limit. I live in IL,Chicago suburb area. The car factory only has it up to 30% tinted glass. Can I have them do it straight from the factory to make it darker? Wonder will it still be those stick on sheet or they actually tinted the glass itself? I never had these done before.
Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by nrmengineer
Depends on the state you live, but here in florida it has to be factory tint only. The % is less than 10 and nothing at all on the back windows and the % is less on the pass and driver side windows. It is best to not use tint as it does make it difficult to see out and may cause an accident. They never actually tint the glass it is a coating they place on it. It is very hard to find a good place to do it right. I went to the best place in town once and I still had bubbles on the glass and it was awful Hope this helps

You could try baby oil and a razor blade, or buy GooGone, it takes the sticky residue off almost anything.
